Frequently Asked Questions
Why are your prices so low?
We are able to offer these prices because we are a small home‑based business. We have no expensive overheads. Occasionally we see cheap offers for scanning from other companies; if you are considering trying them, please check that they will scan at high resolution (at least 3200 DPI), and that dust removal, colour correction and autofocus are all included. We have had a number of customers who have asked us to rescan their films, having been disappointed with the quality of scans from a previous attempt.
Can you offer other scanning services?
Yes, we can offer a range of other services including TIFF file formats, 16-bit colour scans, 110 films, etc. etc. See our price list or email us for more details (info@pro-scan.co.uk).
Are there any extra costs?
No, there are no hidden extras. The prices shown on this listing are all you will pay to have your films scanned.
Can you handle 'panorama' and 'close-up' APS photos?
Many APS cameras offer 3 different photo styles, typically panorama, normal and close-up. In fact, the size of the image is the same in all 3 cases, the effect is achieved by cropping the image and then printing onto suitable sized paper. All the scans you receive will be the whole negative, which you can then crop as you prefer.
Can you do retrieve EXIF data from APS films?
Unfortunately our scanners cannot read the Exif data from APS media.
Can you do anything about grain on the film?
We have noticed that some scans, especially smaller formats like APS seem to exhibit excessive grain, particularly in large areas of plain colour, such as sky or interior walls. The effect varies from one type of film to another, and also from one customer to another, possibly due to variations in the way the films were processed, or even the type of camera that was used. To overcome this, we have invested in some sophisticated grain reduction software, and all our APS customers now receive an additional set of images which have been digitally processed to remove film grain from the scans. There is virtually no loss of detail or resolution (unlike some of the cruder grain filters found in e.g. Photoshop), and the improvement can be quite striking. The modified images are around 6MB per frame. There is no extra charge for this second set of images. Please see our Samples page for an example of the process.
Can you offer bulk discounts
Unfortunately, we do not offer discounts for bulk orders. However, we believe our prices are competitive and prefer to offer the same low rates to all our customers, regardless of quantity.
Can you offer this service outside the UK?
Yes, we already have customers in Europe and North America. The price for scanning is the same, but postage costs will obviously vary. Please contact us (info@pro-scan.co.uk) for a quote.
